Hi! My name is Skylar Kane and I am a second-year Education and Social Transformation major at UCLA! I love to read, spend time with friends, go on side quests, and volunteer. I am passionate about getting to know people through meaningful conversations and love to hear others' stories. I truly want students to grow their skills in writing and to learn more about themselves in the process! I know firsthand how much pressure there is applying to college, but my advice is stay true to yourself and it will all work out. Overall, I applied to 20+ schools with both Common App and UC PIQs and learned a lot about myself through the process; I truly want to uplift my students!

I was an advisor for the mental health app Teen Talk, now called Here App. The app provides peer support and guidance to teens through a moderated digital platform. I trained over 50 hours in active listening, empathy, and mental health awareness to promote safe, supportive conversations and connect users with appropriate resources. This role required continued education as well to learn about newer challenges (for example AI). I currently work 8+ jobs on campus and online, and can speak to questions about balancing work + school.
How I Can Help
6 topicsMy goal would be to understand the full picture behind a student's essay in order to help them highlight important points. I can help students use descriptive langauge to make their story stick out to admissions officers as well as tell their story authetically.
Hi everyone! Within extracurricular exploration, I will spend time getting to know your interests, to introduce ideas of extracurriculars that would be exciting for you. Over time, I have tried may activties and am very aware of what may be out there for you in high school and college! I hope to inspire you to look into something new and understand the important skills you can gain from various extracurricular activities.
Hi everyone! I am very excited to help you start analyzing schools and figuring out where might be the right place for you! I have done a lot of personal work both before deciding on UCLA and after to understand what is important in choosing a college; I have also spoken with many friends to see what it was they were looking for when deciding on a college. I can really help you consider factors that are important for creating a college list through thoughtful questions that may not always seem obvious.
First and foremost, I am extremely aware of how daunting FAFSA and financial aid can be. Whether it be what an SAI number is, how to interpret FAFSA results, and what to do afterwards. I have spent a lot of time through UCLA programs, helping high school students of all backgrounds understand how to fill out the FAFSA form. I am excited to do the same for you!
Hi everyone! I know that scholarships can feel draining, espescially after completing the college application process! However, I believe in reframing the process and seeing it as an opportunity to understand yourself better and portray who you are to scholarship committes. I have applied to over 100+ scholarships and recived 15+ scholarships ranging from $500-$15,000, and I have learned a lot about how to find scholarships that align with you as a person.
Mentorship is extremely important to me; as a child I was lucky enough to receive guidance from several mentors that taught me about the confidence mentorship can provide. I have been a peer tutor and mentor for 4+ years and have extensive experience with providing career/job suggestions, scholarship help, ect. I have interacted with students in STEM and Humanities alike, and have learned about a multitude of resources for students that I would love to share. My friendships expand past California, and even the United States, and I am able to explore various college locations/campus structures.
